Plant Stop & Swap
Posted November 10, 2025
Over 102 people participated in the Plant Stop & Swap at Margaret McDermott Trellis Plaza on November 5, where clippings of golden pothos and monstera were handed out, ready for students to plant at home. Keeping houseplants has been shown to provide a variety of benefits to indoor environments and human health. In addition to all the people, the event also attracted Western Honeybees.
UTD Sustainability Happy House Plant Guide
- Watering: Insert your finger (or a chopstick!) an inch or so into the soil. If the soil is around 50-75% dry, thoroughly water your plant, and allow for sufficient drainage. Try not to follow a consistent watering schedule, and water based on the plants needs.
- Sunlight: Allow for 6-8 hours of indirect light! Direct sunlight may cause the leaves to burn. If you don’t have windows with adequte lighting, try an artificial plant grow light.
- Soil: When the roots are two inches or longer, you can pot up your propagation into soil. Different plants require different soil mixes, but a good starter soil mix is: 1:1:1 ratio perlite, orchid bark, and soil. This allows good drainage and prevents root rot when you water!
Overall, house plants are a great addition to your space, and a fun way to get into gardening! Always ask questions and don’t be afraid to use the internet as a reference. Happy planting friend!
