Comets For Better Transit Collaborate with the Office of Sustainability

There is one conversation I kept having almost every day since I started attending UTD. Someone complains about how they have to drive everywhere, or how it’s so dangerous to bike here, or how public transportation sucks in Richardson. And soon enough, we all start preaching to the choir about how transit in our area is terrible. One day, me and my friends agreed to have that convo for the last time. For once, we decided to actually do something.

So we started an organization — an advocacy group for students who want sustainable, accessible, and affordable transit in and around UTD. We wanted to have an easier time getting from point A to point B without spending so much time and money on a car. We wanted to make an organization that is democratic and open to all students — to all Comets For Better Transit.

That day when we started our organization was about a month ago. Within the first week, we had 30 members. Yesterday, we just surpassed 60.

This semester, the Comets For Better Transit is focusing on three major priorities:

  • To improve parking spots for bikes and skateboard on campus,
  • To get more sidewalks installed on streets that don’t have them
  • To work with the City of Richardson to reduce collisions on the intersection of Waterview and Synergy Park.

We are incredibly excited to work with the Office of Sustainability this semester. Both of us want to spread awareness about the state of biking infrastructure on campus and get students engaged with direct ways to bring more sustainable transit to our area. Stay tuned — we will be collaborating with them on events like group rides and workshops this semester.
