Campus Sustainability Month

UTD Celebrates Campus Sustainability!

UT Dallas recently came together to celebrate Campus Sustainability Month: a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of environmental responsibility and collective action. Students, staff, and faculty participated in events promoting waste reduction, green commuting, and energy conservation, highlighting how small everyday choices can make a big impact. From volunteer cleanups to educational activities, the celebration reflected UTD’s commitment to creating a more sustainable campus and inspiring a culture of stewardship year-round.

Pocket Prairie Workday

As part of Campus Sustainability Month, volunteers gathered for the Pocket Prairie Workday to help maintain one of UTD’s most unique green spaces. The Pocket Prairie serves as a living example of North Texas’s native ecosystems, supporting pollinators, conserving water, and promoting biodiversity right on campus. Students and staff rolled up their sleeves to remove invasive species, harvested basket flower and fire wheel seeds (pictured above), and learned about sustainable landscaping practices. The event showed how hands-on conservation efforts can make a lasting difference in preserving our natural environment.

Sustainability Month Stewards Training

Our campus sustainability stewards recently completed their fall training, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to champion eco-friendly practices across UTD. From waste diversion and composting to energy conservation and community engagement, the training prepared stewards to act and inspire others to make a difference. Together, they are helping build a greener and more sustainable campus, one initiative at a time.

Monarch Fest

UT Dallas celebrated Monarch Fest with a vibrant event dedicated to raising awareness about monarch butterfly conservation and the importance of native habitats. Students and staff learned about the monarchs’ remarkable migration journey and the crucial role pollinators play in our ecosystems. The event featured educational booths, native plant displays, and activities that encouraged participants to support pollinator-friendly practices at home and on campus. Monarch Fest highlighted UTD’s ongoing commitment to biodiversity and environmental stewardship.

CSM Fair

UT Dallas celebrated Campus Sustainability Month with its third annual Sustainability Fair on October 15 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The event invited students, faculty, and staff to learn, create, and take action for a more sustainable future. Booths included a variety of sustainable organizations across the campus, such as Break Free from Plastic, Dr. June Jones.

Attendees enjoyed activities such as making bee motels, learning about Comet Composting, testing their knowledge with buzz-worthy bee trivia, and taking home sustainable swag. The fair brought the campus community together to celebrate innovation, environmental awareness, and collective impact.

Luna Farm Workday

Volunteers came together for another successful month of Luna Farm Workdays, dedicating their Saturday mornings to cultivating and caring for UTD’s sustainable farm space. Participants rolled up their sleeves and got to work mulching the field to suppress weeds and washed and dried gloves, prepping the farm for the winter ahead.

Currently, there are carrots, peas, radishes, and beets growing, and are expected to be harvested in the next month, and they will all be donated to the Comet Cupboard.
