WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.000 Happy Earth Day, everyone. 00:00:02.000 --> 00:00:07.000 Today we are going to talk about ways that we can help sustain the environment. 00:00:07.000 --> 00:00:10.000 [hopeful music] 00:00:10.000 --> 00:00:13.000 All right, so one of the ways we can help sustain the environment 00:00:13.000 --> 00:00:17.000 is by reusing and maximizing the usage of materials, 00:00:17.000 --> 00:00:22.000 which is another way we can say helping by recycling. 00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:26.000 Recycling is the action or process of converting waste into reusable material 00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:31.000 so we can decompose waste materials and make them into new products. 00:00:34.000 --> 00:00:36.000 All right. If we dig a little deeper 00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:39.000 we can start comparing between Upcycling and Downcycling. 00:00:39.000 --> 00:00:46.000 Upcycling is the process where we transform and reuse products, or unwanted useless products, 00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:49.000 and make them into greater value than their original, 00:00:49.000 --> 00:00:52.000 so these are like craft or artistic projects 00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:54.000 --turning carton boxes into a mini bookshelf-- 00:00:54.000 --> 00:01:00.000 while downcycling is turning something into a product of lesser value. 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:02.000 Most of the time when we recycle, 00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:06.000 we take, like, papers from books and turn them into toilet paper. 00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:10.000 Most of the time it involves reprocessing that material 00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:13.000 and then turning it into something else. 00:01:13.000 --> 00:01:16.000 OK, well, let's get creative and do some upcycling. 00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:20.000 Today I'm going to show you how to make old 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:22.000 --you know, not wearing any more-- 00:01:22.000 --> 00:01:27.000 t-shirts into fabric reusable grocery bags. 00:01:27.000 --> 00:01:31.000 So what you're going to need is old t-shirts, fabric scissors, a ruler, and a sharpie 00:01:31.000 --> 00:01:33.000 and we can go ahead and get started. 00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:37.000 [energetic music] 00:01:37.000 --> 00:01:40.000 OK, so first we're going to get an old t-shirt like this 00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:44.000 and start cutting along the sleeve line to cut out the sleeves, 00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:57.000 [industrious folk music] 00:01:57.000 --> 00:02:01.000 and then using a sharpie, you can draw half of a circle around your neckline 00:02:01.000 --> 00:02:03.000 and start cutting out that neckline. 00:02:03.000 --> 00:02:07.000 Now your shirt should look like this, with the sleeves and the neckline cut out. 00:02:07.000 --> 00:02:10.000 Now, taking the sharpie and the ruler, 00:02:10.000 --> 00:02:15.000 you're gonna mark about a one inch difference of tick marks 00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:18.000 on the bottom line of your shirt. 00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:23.000 [industrious folk music] 00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:28.000 From the tick marks, you can mark up about one and a half inches upward 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:31.000 --and this is going to be your cut line-- 00:02:31.000 --> 00:02:35.000 go ahead and get the scissors and cut along that line through all of your tick marks. 00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:40.000 [industrious folk music] 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:43.000 So now that you've finished cutting it should look like this 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:48.000 and you can start tying the top and the bottom knots together, 00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:51.000 making sure that you double-knot it as you go. 00:02:51.000 --> 00:02:57.000 This will seal the opening of your t-shirt to make it into the bag. 00:02:57.000 --> 00:03.06.000 [folk string music] 00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:08.000 Alrighty, well, there's your first bag. 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:11.000 You can use the opening of your sleeves 00:03:11.000 --> 00:03:13.000 --those are going to be your shoulder handles. 00:03:13.000 --> 00:03:19.000 If you don't like the fringe, you can actually switch the shirt inside-out, 00:03:19.000 --> 00:03:21.000 but if you do switch the shirt inside-out, 00:03:21.000 --> 00:03:25.000 make sure that when you are cutting in the beginning 00:03:25.000 --> 00:03:27.000 you turn your shirt out first, 00:03:27.000 --> 00:03:29.000 so then when you do flip your shirt out, 00:03:29.000 --> 00:03:33.000 it should not show the inside-out fabric line. 00:03:33.000 --> 00:03:36.000 So here's another way to make a bag: 00:03:36.000 --> 00:03:37.000 Here I already have a shirt, 00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:41.000 I already cut out the sleeves and the neckline and I already turned it inside-out. 00:03:41.000 --> 00:03:45.000 [folk string music] 00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:47.000 Next, I'm going to go to the bottom of the shirt 00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:51.000 and cut out a slit across like this. 00:03:53.000 --> 00:03:56.000 All right, I'm going to repeat that step and cut out another slit. 00:03:56.000 --> 00:04:00.000 [folk string music] 00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:05.000 Now what I'm doing, I'm basically tying the end of the shirt together 00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:08.000 using one of the slits that I cut out. 00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:10.000 So I'm just going to tie them together 00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:13.000 and make it a very tight knot to secure the end. 00:04:13.000 --> 00:04.26.000 [industrious folk music] 00:04:26.000 --> 00:04:32.000 OK, I'm going to turn the shirt out and reverse it, 00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:34.000 then the knot will go inside. 00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:36.000 You can cut the knot off if you want, 00:04:36.000 --> 00:04:41.000 but basically your bag is almost finished. 00:04:43.000 --> 00:04:46.000 So using the remaining slit that I cut earlier, 00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:51.000 I'm just going to tie the two handles together. 00:04:51.000 --> 00:05:09.000 [industrious folk music] 00:05:09.000 --> 00:05:12.000 --and that's basically your finished products: two grocery bags. 00:05:12.000 --> 00:05:14.000 Happy Shopping!
